Going circular: The next industrial revolution?

Category : Announcements , News

The benefits of recycling, reusing and re-manufacturing have been promoted for years. But today, the practice has evolved from one of environmental responsibility to a model for the future of industry and world economies. It’s called the “circular economy” and is viewed by many as the next industrial revolution.

The circular economy aims to almost eliminate waste by using products, parts and raw materials for as long as possible. Proponents see the model as having tremendous global advantages, offering a solution to population growth, dwindling natural resources and climate change.

Researchers and scientists view it as an absolute necessity, as elements, including gold, silver and tungsten could be exhausted in the next 50 years. Other resources, such as crude oil, are getting harder and more expensive, to extract. Commodity prices are increasingly volatile and environmental degradation is impacting the food supply.

Bringing the circular economy to reality will require the reorganisation of how the world produces and consumes. Changes will include designing products to last longer, and in a way that allows raw materials and components to be stripped out when the product has reach the end of its service life. Using renewable resources, reusing and recycling excess resources, and buying and selling services instead of products would also be standard procedure.

Leading business and industrial leaders are already buying in. French automaker Renault, fashion retailer H&M, and telecommunications giant Vodafone have introduced  “circularity” into their business models.  Other companies are sure to follow.  Could your organisation benefit?

New SKF grease cuts false brinelling damage in half

Category : Announcements , News

The innovative anti-false brinelling grease for hub bearing units from SKF reduces friction and wear significantly, while improving bearing performance.

SKF has launched a new grease that has been proven to reduce the damage caused by false brinelling in hub bearing units by more than 50 per cent when compared with competing greases. The lubricant has been introduced to the market to help overcome this wear phenomenon and can also enable overall improvements in vehicle efficiency by limiting fretting corrosion and the micro-damages caused by vibration.

Designed for use with both new designs and retrofits, the grease is fully compatible with bearing components materials and came out as the best performing lubricant for reducing the raceway micro-damages caused by false brinelling when tested alongside several other standard greases.

In particular, this solution was shown to lead to a consistent improvement in bearing robustness against the micro-damages in the raceways that often occur during vehicle transportation by rail or truck, for example. In addition, the grease maintains the performance level of the hub bearing unit, including service life.

Roberto Galante, Manager of Advanced Development Wheel End at SKF, said: “With the ability to cut false brinelling damage in half, this grease will play a vital role in helping OEMs to ensure that the micro-damages caused by ball-raceway contact in hub bearing units during vehicle transportation will not exceed the strict thresholds specified by automotive companies. Furthermore, the lubricant maintains the same bearing qualities for consistently optimal reliability and performance.”

Category : Announcements , News

SKF has launched a sophisticated condition monitoring system with cloud connectivity to cut downtime and increase fleet reliability through enabling predictive maintenance in the marine sector. Introduced to the market for the first time at Posidonia 2016, the SKF Marine CM Route Kit, includes all the tools needed to implement reliable condition monitoring techniques onboard ships and allows operators to adopt an integrated approach to condition based maintenance on their entire fleet.

The kit, which includes the SKF Microlog handheld monitoring device and dedicated marine software with marine typical equipment models, can be used on all kind of vessels, as well as offshore platforms to collect data on machine and component condition. For each asset it will gauge the overall vibration levels and will be able to identify possible issues, such as imbalance, misalignment, wear, mechanical looseness, and bearing and gear faults

The measurement data is securely transferred via satellite to the SKF One Global Cloud, where SKF’s Condition Monitoring (CM) expert remote diagnostic team can retrieve and analyse the assets data as part of its maintenance consulting services. Furthermore all data can easily be accessed by the chief engineer and fleet manager, closing the loop and involving the crew in the Condition-based maintenance process.

The SKF CM expert analysis output are the recommended actions of needed maintenance which are sent to the chief engineer to take the appropriate actions and to keep the assets running smooth and efficiently.

By introducing long term monitoring and machine efficiency evaluation techniques, the SKF Marine CM Route Kit allows industry professionals to adopt a centralised predictive maintenance programme across their entire fleets. Through the detection of the machine conditions that lead to failure, proactive remedial work can be carried out to extend maintenance intervals, eliminate potential breakdowns and ensure consistently high operational safety, while also enhancing service life and reducing repair costs considerably. SKF to showcase sealing solutions for two-wheeler suspensions at EICMA 2015

Category : Announcements , News

SKF will showcase new sealing solutions that boost performance for two-wheeler suspension systems and improve overall control and comfort for riders at EICMA 2015.

SKF will be exhibiting at the show with its official distribution partner InnTeck, an international distributor of high-tech components and racing accessories for motorcycles and bikes. Innovative SKF seals that are featured in several suspension products distributed by InnTeck, including floating pistons and piston seals and fork closed cartridge seals, will be featured at the dual SKF/InnTeck booth.

Floating pistons

This sealing module from SKF is an integrated solution for the pressure reservoir of rear shocks on two-wheelers. The unit replaces conventional multi-component designs and integrates a membrane feature into the piston. An advanced external sealing lip design controls oil and gas transfer and reduces friction, virtually eliminating stick and slip effects. The reduced friction and rubber membrane design also helps improve rider control and comfort. The floating piston module will be available for Öhlins shock absorbers with a reservoir internal diameter of 49mm and WP shock absorbers with a reservoir internal diameter of 52mm.

Piston seals and fork closed cartridge seals

Combining low-friction rubber compounds and optimized seal design, piston seals and fork closed cartridge seals from SKF deliver outstanding sealing performance for two-wheeler forks. Both feature dynamic seal lips to reduce friction and integrated metal inserts to improve seal contact with the shaft and housing. When used together, these seals enable better absorption of impacts from small obstacles, particularly during braking, improving rider confidence and thereby contributing to higher performance.

Piston seals and fork closed cartridge seals from SKF are both offered for the Showa SFF-Air TAC. Packaged and distributed by InnTeck, this kit replaces the air piston seals and original rod seals of the Showa SFF Air-TAC forks, used on some Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki models.

Counterfeits infecting your supply chain

Category : Announcements

From Italy, Germany, Netherlands and finally to China – SKF Brand Protection Team recently unraveled a complex chain of counterfeit supply, traced in several steps back to a source in
China.

The case highlights the importance of knowing your supplier’s supplier, and how sources perceived as safe can be highly “contagious” in terms of counterfeit supply.
A “safe” source can infect the whole supply chain Are your sources really safe?
The story started with one of the numerous raids that law enforcement officials carry out across the globe against suspected counterfeit traders, this time in outskirts of a town in
northern Italy. During the raid, several counterfeit products were identified and confiscated by Italian Financial Police (Guardia di Finanza). In order to track down the source and stop
potentially dangerous goods from spreading in the market, SKF requested that the Italian company disclose their source for the counterfeit goods.
The Italian company’s owner, which had been caught with the fake goods in stock, refused to believe the products could be counterfeit. He had purchased them from a “safe” distributor in
Germany, whose owner he claimed to know personally very well. After a prolonged legal process, SKF Brand Protection Team finally managed to learn the source, and the authorities
ordered the confiscated goods to be destroyed.

From the Italy to Germany
Once learning of the source in Germany, SKF Brand Protection Team moved quickly to track down the company, using the evidence gathered in the Italian raid. The German trader
understood the seriousness of the situation, and eventually agreed to cooperate with SKF; disclosing full information on other customers that had been affected, and the source of the
counterfeit goods. Their supplier was a trading company in Netherlands. An investigation of the Dutch supplier revealed another company in the Rotterdam area as the original importer
to Europe.

Rotterdam – “the Gateway to Europe”
Being the largest port in Europe, and having a strategic location on the North Sea,
Rotterdam is sometimes referred to as “the Gateway to Europe”. This was also where the counterfeit bearings were imported into Europe. The Rotterdam-based company had
previously tried to import counterfeit bearings, which Dutch customs successfully had stopped and destroyed. With this second case the company had made a final wrong move,
and was forced to close operations last year (2014). During the investigation, it was found that the Rotterdam trader had convinced some customers that he had a reliable source in
Asia, whom purchased directly from “SKF in Singapore”.
The only proof provided, was a scanned copy of an old shipping label, which unfortunately mislead some customers. As often in these cases, the actually supplier was based in China,
not in Singapore, and had no affiliation to SKF. Customers should also note that not only shipping labels are copied, even fake certificates of origin/conformity are circulating. If
counterfeiters can make counterfeit bearings, which visually are looking better and better, one can imagine how easily they can make a fake piece of paper.
A long and complex route to market, with several pitfalls This case stresses the complex route to market counterfeit goods can have, and that no matter how safe a supplier seems, counterfeits can enter the chain at many points. The case showed how several companies acted opportunistically, looking for “good deals” on the market, and some went further to willfully trick customers. Furthermore it shows the importance of being suspicious of companies claiming to have a supply “directly from” SKF,
or distributors that previously were authorized by SKF.

The most reliable source of current authorized SKF distributors is available on www.skf.com, under “Find a distributor”.

Apple makes an example of SKF mobility

The Internet of Things, Internet of Anything or Industrial Internet. Call it what you will, the principle is the same: building a web of connectivity where machines, people and systems achieve unparalleled levels of productivity and efficiency. Its potential is just beginning to be understood, but some predict this could have a profound impact on the way we all live and work.

SKF is already busy contributing to that infrastructure, applying the power of mobility and industrial data analysis in its own operations and as a service available to customers. SKF creates its own apps and has distributed more than 10,000 iPad and iPhones company-wide. And it is providing customers with new calculation, measurement and revolutionary functional mobile solutions that simplify and speed their work, and save them money.

In August 2014, Apple made a series of films highlighting SKF work in mobility, especially in app development and with Apple products. But they also looked closer at the SKF approach to mobility in general, and showcased some of the innovative ways the company is applying mobility technology in its own operations and for the benefit of its customers.

If you haven’t already, see what Apple sees in SKF  http://www.apple.com/iphone/business/profiles/skf/
